Description
The canal was dug for the purpose of inland navigation and to drain the abundant spring waters that swamped much of the plain between Monfalcone and the Isonzo. While the notion of navigation was shelved, except for rowing boats for reclamation tasks, the canal fulfils its main function with the water pumps of Sacchetti and Borlecce and the numerous flap gates which discharge into the watercourse. The Brancolo canal attracts many anglers thanks the quantity of mullet. Limited wetlands and woodlands have survived reclamation in the areas of Bosc Grand, Fiumisin and Schiavetti-Cavana.
