The Spigolo bank

Description

Between the Matta tidal flats and the Punta del Masurin, there is a large tidal plain that is muddy further inland and sandy towards the sea. There are large beds of dwarf eelgrass that provide food during the winter for very large numbers of mute swans, wild geese and greater white-fronted geese, widgeon, mallards and coots. The shallow waters are barely navigable so only the outer part with sandbars is frequented. Low tide causes the emergence of the “caregoni” – concrete structures to which seaplanes used to moor in the 1930s. To the south of the Punta del Masurin, there is a wide tidal flat adjacent to the final part of the left embankment of the Isonzo. Dry land comes to a sudden end in the cut of the Litoranea Veneta, dug to avoid the bar at the mouth of the Isonzo. The land provides a home all the year round to a troop of Camargue horses kept wild in the Riserva Naturale delle foci del fiume Isonzo (Isonzo river mouth nature reserve), which are joined during the summer by some cattle of a primitive breed.
