Description
The island, home to a Marian sanctuary and to a community of Franciscan friars, is well-known for the famous Perdon di Barbana procession. This is held annually on the first Sunday of July and includes a procession of boats decked with flags in the lagoon from Grado to Barbana. The procession, which begins in the early morning, is headed by the “Battella”, the boat carrying the statue of Our Lady of the Angels, which is kept in the Basilica of Grado. For the event, the swing bridge that connects Grado to the mainland is opened and the civil authorities make a symbolic gift to the Madonna. The origin of the pilgrimage dates back to a vow made by the community of Grado after the plague of 1237. The name “perdòn” derives instead from the custom of taking the sacrament of confession during the celebration.
