Description
The small town stands on a peninsula jutting out into the lagoon. It is still largely surrounded by channels and fishing reserves, even though recent development tends to hide the unusual environment as one approaches from the landward side. The old town used to be protected by walls, which can still be seen at the bottom of the former tuna canning plant and at other points where it has been brought to light. The ancient tower rises above the town and offers a wonderful view of the lagoon and the plain beyond. Until only a few decades ago extensive oak forests grew inland and a small portion of it, Sacile wood, still stands on the road from Marano to Carlino. Marshes and woodland have combined until recently to keep the town somewhat isolated from nearby villages where Friulian was spoken and thus to retain its traditional Venetian dialect and well-established maritime traditions associated with fishing. The Valle Canalnovo nature reserve, a former fishing reserve now run as a bird sanctuary, lies very close to the town.
