The small Filtri di Aurisina harbour

Description

About a mile beyond the little port of Santa Croce, we come to that of Aurisina, built in 1855 and characterised by the 1854 building serving the Aqueduct, which collects fresh water from the Aurisina springs. They are part of a complex system of freshwater springs emerging at sea level or below between Aurisina and Sistiana; for the most part, they are connected with the subterranean catchment of the Timavo. The building seen from the sea is the aqueduct’s works, built in a square gothic manner like the castle of Miramare (not by coincidence: the same architect was employed for both: Carl Junker). In the past, it used to contain steam and then diesel-powered pumps to lift the water along pipes laid against the slopes of the Carso to a filtering station located 140 metres above sea level (Santa Croce Filtri). Initially, this engineering plant served to provide water for the railway stations of the Ferrovia Meridionale which linked Vienna and Trieste, but it was later used to provide water for Trieste itself.
