Costa dei Barbari

Description

Proceeding towards Sistiana, we pass in front of a large concrete building dating from the 1970s, a hotel that has since been transformed into a residence. The Costa dei Barbari stretches from here to another important tourist complex that is just being finished, Porto Piccolo, built within a large abandoned quarry. The beach here has been used for a long time by nudists, thanks to its beauty and natural wilderness. In actual fact, the coast here has regained its natural appearance in recent times, with abandoned quarry workings still identifiable amongst the new plant growth. In Roman times, this part of the coast was used to embark the masses of white stone from the Aurisina quarries, and for the most part used at Aquileia. The slide, that was once covered with sheets of lead and was used to lower the rocks, can still be seen.
