Description
At the end of the Rive, near the basin of the Sacchetta and with its entrance in via di Campo Marzio 5, this museum offers displays on three floors. The collection derives from an initial collection put together in 1904 by the Società di Pesca e Pescicoltura Marina, founded in 1888 with the aim of promoting and increasing fishing on the eastern coasts of the northern Adriatic. This initial nucleus was joined by others, thanks above all to material from the Istituto Nautico di Trieste. In this way, with the patronage of the Municipality of Trieste, the Civico Museo del Mare was opened in a building erected in 1721 as the Lazzaretto S. Carlo and subsequent headquarters of the Arsenale di Artiglieria.
