Description
This is one of the most frequented centres enjoyed by Triestini for sport and bathing. In the seventh century, a convent stood here, which was subsequently taken over by the Benedictines, Templars and Franciscans until 1785. With the construction of the castle on the promontory, the surrounding area became more fashionable and saw the construction of a hotel with private beach and cabins, where heliotherapy was offered. This was connected to Trieste with two small steamboats, Mira and Volosca, which would moor at the only jetty then existing. The little port was built after the Second World War, with the creation of the present cement bathing establishment on what had until then been a beach. Today, Grignano offers 200 berths for yachts and small boats, which are managed by a number of sailing clubs, and there is also a large hotel now used for lodgings and teaching facilities for the ICTP (the Unesco-administered International Centre for Theoretical Physics). On the ground floor, there is a museum of science, the Immaginario Scientifico – IS, which offers a host of practical scientific experiments and a number of workshops for schools. From Grignano, a set of stairs leads to the park and Castelletto of Miramare, while a stroll towards the breakwater reveals the boats used by the mussel farmers and the fishermen’s store rooms.
