Valle del Canal Novo Regional Nature Reserve

Description

A vast area of wetlands used to extend to the west of Marano Lagunare, towards the mouth of the river Cormor, before they were reclaimed in the 1950s. Valle Canalnovo is all that remains of this zone and was itself originally turned into a fishing reserve, subsequently becoming a nature reserve and lagoon visitors’ centre. This area is saltier than the fishing reserves in Grado lagoon, on account of the presence of artesian wells supplying fresh water, and contains numerous pools, shoals, groves of reeds and groups of trees. The 121 hectares of nature reserves also includes a restaurant, paths leading to observation points, an aquarium containing species of fishes found in the lagoon and a guest house. The centre organizes environmental education courses and guided tours. Valle Canal Novo also acts as an information point for boat trips to Marano lagoon and the Foce dello Stella nature reserve.
