Description
According to tradition, the ancient town of Bibiones used to stand on the westernmost island in the lagoon, in front of the mouth of the Stella, and was perhaps swept away in a flash flood. Amphoras, ceramics, mosaic tiles and tombs have certainly been found in the area, while in the early twentieth century columns and capitals could still be seen in the Bioni channel lying at a depth of around two metres and one could “…see and touch the stone steps that perhaps belonged to a harbour, a temple or a palace, when the tide was out…”. The only archaeological excavations in the area were carried out in 1911 not far from these remains, probably part of an ancient jetty. These unearthed the foundations of a building that was probably a warehouse.
