69-81 cm, sexes similar. Camouflaged plumage. Present during wintering and migration. It nests here occasionally. Frequents freshwater wetlands with reeds, the lower reaches of rivers, the network of drainage canals and valli da pesca (fishing reserves). It is of crepuscular habits and is more easily observed at low tide when some individuals draw closer to the edge of the reed beds.
