80-93 cm, white plumage and flat beak, wide at the tip. Present throughout the year, with lowest numbers in autumn. Very localised in in the restored areas of Isola della Cona, in valle Cavanata and in the lagoon of Marano. It successfully nested in valle Cavanata in 1997 and subsequently there have been some attempts at Isola della Cona. It feeds on small vertebrates and large invertebrates that it captures by sifting through the shallows with a distinctive lateral movement.
