23-29 cm, sexes similar, brown in winter, black with rufous cheeks in the breeding season. Present throughout the year, it nests in freshwater wetlands and for overwintering prefers areas with low salinity and the valli da pesca (fishing reserves). It is rare at sea and in open areas of the lagoons.
