45-55 cm, marked dimorphism, the male is grey with black wing tips, the female brown, and both have a white rump. Present during migration and wintering. It searches for food in open spaces and forms traditional roosting sites on sandbanks in valli da pesca (fishing reserves), reed beds at river mouths and in uncultivated agricultural areas.
