Haematopus ostralegus
39-44 cm, sexes similar, White and black with red-orange beak and reddish legs. Present all year round, a recent phenomenon is that during wintering, it concentrates in a few sites. It breeds between the mouth of the Isonzo and the lagoon of Marano with a growing number of pairs. It builds its nest on the least disturbed sandy beaches, and feeds on shellfish on the tidal flats.
