18-31 cm, sexes similar. Light grey uppers and white lower parts, the beak shorter than the similar sandpiper. Present from August to May, it does not nest in the region. It frequents sandy shores and in particular the shoreline where it seeks out food. Fairly trusting, it can sometimes be observed among bathers on the beach.
