Philomachus pugnax
22-32 cm, marked sexual dimorphism: the male is much larger and in May sports a typical nuptial plumage that is brownish with lighter underparts. It has a short beak. Present from February to September, it does not nest here. It frequents the innermost and most brackish lagoons, cultivated fields, some valli da pesca (fishing reserves) and restored areas of Isola della Cona.
