17-19 cm, sexes similar. Blue upperparts, red underparts with large, dark beak dark and very short tail, which in flight makes it resemble a “rocket”. Present throughout the year, it nests along rivers and in some valli. Outside the breeding season it is also commonly seen along the high coast and in ports.
