25-29 cm, sexes similar. A very colourful bird, it has a distinctive flight suited to capturing large insects in flight. It perches on leafless branches, telephone wires etc. Present from May to August-September, it nests in colonies along eroded river banks, on mounds of sandy earth or walls provided for the purpose as in the case of Isola della Cona. It frequents the lagoon in search of food.
