Northern shoveller

Anas clypeata

44-52 cm; the male this a distinctive white chest. Mainly a wintering species, some pairs breed here. It frequents wetlands with low salinity and the valle Cavanata. The large beak that gives the species its name is used to filter the water while trapping invertebrates and fragments of plant. In the spring, migrating birds may be encountered offshore, sometimes associated with the similar garganey.
