The recently restored and now visitable Sacchetti pumping station, and the Borlecce pumping station serve the entire reclamation area, as far as mechanical drainage is concerned, in an area falling within the municipalities of Turriaco, San Canzian d'lsonzo, Staranzano and Monfalcone, covering 3,000 hectares, on which there is a drainage network consisting of over 55 kilometres of canals. It has been in operation since the early 1930s and the water pumps installed in the system enable the removal of over 6,000 litres per second, reducing the danger of floods in the area. Despite the presence of hydraulic works, however, the reclaimed area has several times in the past suffered the effects of significant and extreme flood events. Among these, it is worth recalling the tremendous storm in the night between 25 and 26 November 1969, which demolished the entire sea wall built to protect the seaward side of the Monfalcone basin. During those days, the water flooded the area between the Brancolo canal and the seashore, even reaching the area of the pumping station, which remained in operation throughout.
