In front of the river mouths or lagoon inlets there are some broad sandbars built up from sediment deposited as a result of the decreased speed of the outflowing current, and consolidated through a dynamic equilibrium with the motion of waves and tides. Often, these bars are dredged to create a channel sufficiently deep to allow access to the lagoon to medium-size boats. That is the reason for the transverse channel to enter the Isonzo.
