The lagoon area and surroundings are characterised by zones below mean sea level, which need the use of pumps to drain rainwater from the area into the sea or the lagoon. The pumping stations comprise machines that lift water from below the average sea level to above the embankments placed 3 meters above mean sea level. The Consorzio di Bonifica Bassa Friulana (Lower Friuli Reclamation Consortium) is responsible for managing 30 pumping stations in its area of competence in order to protect population centres, agricultural areas, industry, commerce and tourist locations on the lowlands from natural disaster. To help in this, the Consortium has developed a system for remote collection of data from the pumps.
