The “trabacolo lugger

This traditional cargo and fishing boat was used until the mid-twentieth century in the northern Adriatic, initially powered by sails and later by diesel engines. One trabacolo, the Marin Faliero, was moored in the Valentinis canal in Monfalcone until the 1980s. Others were moored in Sacchetta in Trieste until the 1970s. Locally, they were used to transport sand and gravel between the Isonzo and Grado with Trieste as destination. They often returned with the waste of the time: glass, porcelain, cutlery. A dump of the period, now covered with earth and cultivated, is present by the banks of the Isonzato near the Idrovora di Volta Scura serving Isola Morosini.
