The sea routes to and from Grado and Aquileia were very busy at the time. This is testified to by an important discovery recovered on 25 September 1999 off the coast of Grado after 12 years of study and investigation: the wreck of the Julia Felix, a Roman cargo ship that sank in 199 BC with her cargo and crew. She was carrying 300 amphorae of wine, fish sauce, olive oil and a few barrels containing glass to be recycled. The idea of being able to raise the entire ship, 18 m wide and 5 m long from the seabed, proved impossible because of the fragility of the old hull, so it was rebuilt after dividing it into several parts. It is now preserved on the first floor of the Museo di Archeologia Subacquea Nazionale, but cannot yet be visited.
