These were fishermen who used the trata, a trawl net some 100-150 m long and 5 m high, with floats on the upper side and lead weights on the lower; the trata would be used on the seabed just off the beaches with two batele boats laying the net over an arc of approximately 50 metres while on land two groups of tratauri would haul in the two ends of the net in synchronous manner to imprison the fish in the sack part of the net. It was their activity that led to the sandbank being called dei tratauri.
