This was the name given to the sand found in the “Fosa de Morgo” area (where the Morgo channel reaches the sea), reflecting its extremely coarse, shiny texture, probably on account of the large particles of silica it included; until about the middle of the century, Grado’s “barche de sabion” would transport this sand to the glassworks of Murano and to the main railway station in Trieste, where it was loaded onto trains heading for Hungarian glassworks.
