The “cason” huts found in the lagoon have an extremely ancient origin and are still to be found in the lagoons of Grado, Marano and Caorle, in the Veneto Region. Many of those around Grado are at least partly built of masonry, while in Marano they are all made of reeds and usually lack any sort of chimney. In the past, the smoke was allowed to make its way through the reed roofing and when it rained, the reeds would swell to make a watertight covering. The big problem was what to do when it became necessary to light a fire in rainy weather. In these cases the smoke would gradually dry the roof and squeeze through as the rainwater evaporated. At present there are very few casoni without a chimney in Marano too. Although the casoni in Marano and Grado are very similar, it is interesting to note that the terms used for the various parts of the building are very different.
