Lignano pinewood

Lignano used to be known as “Pineda di sinistra” (left-hand pinewood), while Bibione was “Pineda di destra” (right-hand pinewood), with regard to the river Tagliamento. The black pine is the indigenous tree of the pinewoods growing along the shore and also grows on the Carso plateau, while the stone pine and the maritime pine have been introduced. The undergrowth consists of the remains of the traditional Mediterranean “macchia” – holm oak, Phyllirea (mock privet) – and winter heath, which is typical of alpine and pre-alpine scrubland.
