In order to exploit the mild influence of the Mediterranean, the Triestine coast has for centuries been modified in order to cultivate crops on its steep sea-facing slopes, with farmers building a series of terraced “pastini” (“fields). Drystone walls built using flysch (sandstone and marl) stabilise the friable slopes liable to landslide. The terraces are used to cultivate excellent red and white grapes (Vitoska and Glera) and many olives.
