Fishing for tuna in the past

Fishing for tuna along this stretch of coast used to be done in what is probably a unique manner, thanks to the morphology of the Carso, which suddenly drops to the sea. The tuna would be spotted from three viewpoints positioned on the cliff top, about 150 metres above the sea, and each about 600 metres apart. The large prey would be chased, with the spotters yelling directions, and caught using large nets to surround the fish, called “tratte”, handled by the skilful fishermen of Barcola, Contovello, Santa Croce and Aurisina. The net would be stretched from the beach outwards by two fishermen rowed by four men, and then brought back to the beach where it would be hauled in by all the villagers. On 20 August 1954, the last important haul of tuna was made from Santa Croce.
